Opening in theaters today, “Waves” first entered the Oscar conversation shortly after it premiered at Telluride in September. Written and directed by Trey Edward Shults (“It Comes at Night”), the film follows a family (Brown is the rigidly competitive father and Renée Elise Goldsberry is mom) unraveling when their high school wrestling champion son (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) develops an addiction to painkillers after he’s injured during a match. Film Review: ‘Somewhere Winter’

Film Review: ‘Somewhere Winter’
A woman’s 30-year longing for the man she can’t stop loving is chronicled in “Somewhere Winter,” a rewarding adaptation of the novel by prolific author and screenwriter Rao Xueman. by top Mark Lee Ping Bing (“In the Mood for Love”) and features fine performances by Ma Sichun (“Soulmate”) and Wallace Huo (“Our Time Will Come”) as lovers torn apart by fate, family responsibilities and political forces. This handsomely packaged item from producer Jimmy Huang and director David Wang Weiming (“Sex Appeal”) should receive a warm reception when it opens in China and North America on Nov. 15.

The film’s title refers to “Possibly in Winter,” a 1987 hit by Taiwanese singer Chyi Chin that inspired a teenage Rao Xueman to write to her idol. Chyi’s ballad about long-distance relationships provided the linking device for Rao’s 2018 novel about a woman’s romantic journey during times of great social and economic change in China.

Film Review: ‘Line of Duty’

Film Review: ‘Line of Duty’
High on energy if low on credibility, “Line of Duty” stars Aaron Eckhart as a cop from Birmingham, Ala., whose day gets a lot more hectic when he’s caught up in a kidnapping whose victim is under immediate mortal threat. This latest from prolific genre helmer Stephen C. Miller is a little off-putting at times with its undercurrent of pro-police, anti-everyone-else rhetoric — though that may play well with some of the target demographic. In any case, action fans looking for a lot of forward motion could do worse than this lively, increasingly over-the-top feature-length chase. It opens Nov. 15 on U.S. screens, day-and-date with on demand.

Officer Frank Penny (Eckhart) is a street cop with a world-weary, borderline-demoralized demeanor (we don’t find out exactly why until much later), starting his day bantering with a favorite neighborhood kid (Elijah Cooper). Some blocks away, his superiors are orchestrating a trap

Netflix Orders Rosa Salazar-Led ‘Brand New Cherry Flavor’ Series

  • The Wrap
Netflix has given a series order to “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” an eight-episode horror-thriller with Rosa Salazar tapped as the lead, a Netflix representative told TheWrap.

Eric Lange (“Escape at Dannemora”), Catherine Keener (“Kidding”), Manny Jacinto (“The Good Place”) and Jeff Ward (Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) have also been cast in the series, based on the horror novel by Todd Grimson, published in 2011 by Schaffner Press.

Netflix describes “Brand New Cherry Flavor” as telling the story of Lisa Nova (Salazar), an aspiring film director in the sun-drenched but seamy world of 1990 Los Angeles who embarks on a mind-altering journey — from the streets of Beverly Hills to the forests of Brazil — of supernatural revenge.

Film Review: ‘Crown Vic’

Film Review: ‘Crown Vic’
Definitely the more sober-sided of two new films involving cops and cop-killers, “Crown Vic” juggles slice-of-life observation and thriller elements as a grizzled Lapd veteran shepherds a newbie through his first patrol shift. Writer-director Joel Souza’s “Crown Vic” doesn’t always balance those elements ideally, but it’s still a respectable if non-revelatory cruise through a familiar terrain of mean streets and men in blue.

Transformed by a darkened crew cut and ’stache, with a crankypants working-stiff voice, Thomas Jane is almost unrecognizable as longtime peace officer Ray Mandel. He’s in an irritable mood even before meeting trainee Nick Holland, who’s just transferred from an off-street post in Oakland to commence his maiden tour in a squad car three years after police-academy graduation. Nick is from a family of cops, and seems to feel he’s got a lot to prove. Yet he’s taken aback by Ray’s cynical,

Film Review: ‘The Warrior Queen of Jhansi’

Film Review: ‘The Warrior Queen of Jhansi’
Early in “The Warrior Queen of Jhansi,” there’s a scene that feels like something you’d find in a Bollywood take on “Wonder Woman,” during which Rani Lakshmibai, the feisty monarch of the title, takes time from serving as drill instructor for a unit of female troops to deal with the harrumphing skepticism of a male visitor. “Do you really think you can train these women to fight like men?” he asks. “No,” Lakshmibai confidently replies. Pause. “I will train them to fight better than men.”

Yes, “The Warrior Queen of Jhansi” is that kind of movie.

Specifically, it’s the kind of old school historical epic where charismatic upstarts lead idealistic revolts against tyrannical colonialists, outnumbered revolutionaries are by turns anxiously dreaded and condescendingly underestimated, and scowling louts periodically reveal the full depths of their industrial-strength nastiness by bellowing lines such as, “She will never surrender! She needs to be broken and destroyed!

Kurt Sutter Says ‘Mayans Mc’ Finale Was Changed After He Was Fired: ‘They Dumbed It Down and Made It Safe’
In a now-deleted tweet, former “Mayans M.C.” boss Kurt Sutter accused the network and studio behind the series of changing the ending of Season 2 after he was fired, a move he described as a WGA violation.

“I feel obliged to tell fans that after I was let go, days before it aired, without my knowledge, the [studio and network] changed the ending of the S2 finale,” Sutter wrote. “Beyond the disrespect and WGA violation, the change is dishearteningly indicative of the new regime — they dumbed it down and made it safe.”

Sutter did not specify what changes were made to the episode, which aired on FX on last week. The series is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios.

'Knives Out' Cast Talks Bringing the Whodunit to the Trump Era
Don’t expect Rian Johnson’s star-studded whodunit, Knives Out, to feature any outdated references to past wars or broody main characters common in this genre. Instead, the lively murder mystery includes an eccentric bunch of characters who smoke juuls and have obviously seen Hamilton.

"One of the big things that’s interesting to me is usually when you see whodunits, they’re period pieces," Johnson said. "They’re set in the past or they’re timeless. I thought, 'What would a whodunit look like if it was set in 2019 in America?'"
